90s Movies That Make Us Wish We Were Young Again

9 Movies from the 90’s

Our five senses have always connected us to those wonderful memories we have of our child hood. Check out these nine movies I used to watch over and over again, while growing up with my sister. I’ve watched these movies so many times, I’ve memorized every line. Maybe you’ll see some of your favorites too!

Home Alone

(1990)

Doesn’t every kid wish being left alone, so they can do whatever they want? Be careful what you wish for! Most of the time, things are never what they seem to be. This holiday classic is fun for the whole family! This movie is usually on cable during the holiday season. Unfortunately, It hasn’t been showing the past few years during Freeform’s 25 Days of Christmas.

Fun Fact: Macaulay Culkin was best friends with Michael Jackson and is the godfather to his daughter, Paris. They recently showed off their matching tattoos.

Favorite Movie Quotes:

Gangster Johnny: Keep the change, ya filthy animal!

Kevin: Buzz, your girlfriend, woof!

Marv: Harry, Why the hell you dressed like a chicken?

Buzz: I wouldn’t let you sleep in my room if you were growing on my ass!

Marv: Kids are scared of the dark.
Harry: You’re afraid of the dark, too, Marv.

Mrs. Doubtfire

(1993)

v1.bTsxMTE5MDQzMztqOzE3NDU0OzEyMDA7ODAwOzEyMDA.jpegI began watching this movie at a young age, but as I got older, I actually understood all of the adult jokes, which makes it even funnier. However, the plot of the movie is quite sad. This is about a father who will do whatever it takes to be with his children. The ending makes me tear up every time. This is Robin Williams at his best! There was a script written for a sequel some time before Williams passed away, but he was uninterested in the weak storyline. This movie is often played on cable channels, E! or Freeform. Favorite Movie Quotes:

Daniel: [acting as potential nanny] Are your kids well behaved or do they need like, a few light slams every now and then?

Daniel: [acting as potential nanny] I don’t work with the males, cause I used to be one.

Daniel: [acting as potential nanny] Ahhhh! Laila, get back into your cell! Don’t make me get the hose! Hello?

Mrs. Doubtfire: Oh, the terrorists! They ran that way, it was a run by fruiting!

Hocus Pocus

(1993)

hocuspocus_poster

Why did we love this movie? I have no idea! Witches who come back to life, because a virgin lit a candle and they want to suck the lives from children, to live eternally. By the way, what kind of name is Thackery Binx? Bette Midler said this was one of her favorite roles as an actress. Catch the movie during Freeform’s 13 days of Halloween.

Favorite Movie Quotes:

Dani: A virgin…Lit the candle

Dani: Max likes your yabbos. In fact, he loves them!

Winifred: Why was I cursed with such idiot sisters?

Winifred: What a glorious morning! Makes me sick!

Jumanji

(1995)

2960

Jumanji was based on the book written by Chris Van Allsburg. You would think being stuck in a game would be fun, but who wants to be stuck in the Jungle with wild animals and no shelter? This is another action packed family film. I’m looking forward to Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, in theaters this December. Nothing will compare to the original, however, I’m interested to see Kevin Hart play a role!

Favorite Movie Quotes:

Alan: In the jungle you must wait, until the dice read five or eight

Alan: What year is it?

Alan: [Driving a car] Don’t worry, I’ve done this before, once

Samuel Parrish: What the Devil!

Matilda

(1996)

We all wish we had magical powers! Weather it’s reading minds, flying, or punishing our parents. Matilda is based on the book by Roald Dahl. She is born into a family who couldn’t care less about her and uses her abilities to make horrible things happen to them. One of the things we love about this movie, is that Paul Reubens (Pee Wee Herman) has a small role as an FBI agent. Mara Wilson lost her passion for acting after filming this movie. Matilda has a whopping 90 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. This movie is also shown a lot on Freeform. Check your current listings.

I went to see Matilda on broadway, with my sister, back in the spring. They featured acts using pretty cool special effects, including Trunchbull swinging Amanda’s pigtails and Bruce eating the chocolate cake.

Favorite Movie Quotes:

Students: [reciting the words as Matilda magically writes them on the blackboard] Agatha, This is Magnus. Give my little bumblebee her house and her money. Then get out of town. If you don’t, I will get you. I will get you like you got me. That is a promise!

Harry Wormwood: Young lady, where were you?
Matilda: Miss Trunchbull kept the whole school late because this boy ate some chocolate cake.
Harry Wormwood: That’s the biggest lie I’ve ever heard. Did you see all those packages outside? They were left out there for the whole world to see because you weren’t here to take ’em in!

Zinnia Wormwood: [cutting off Harry’s hat with scissors] I still don’t see how you glued your hat on, Harry. I mean, I know you say you didn’t, but obviously, you did.
Harry Wormwood: I did not glue my hat to my head! The hat shrunk! The fibers fused to my hair!

The Borrowers

(1997)

I’ve always had a fascination with little things. Maybe, because I’m petite myself. It’s no surprise I fell in love with this movie. It wasn’t until much later, while watching Roseanne, that I realized who John Goodman was. Tom Felton, who played Malfoy in the Harry Potter series, is Peagreen in this movie. I haven’t watched it in ages!

Favorite Movie Quotes:

Pod Clock: A Borrower is quiet, conscientious, and inconspicuous. We don’t steal; we borrow.

Peagreen Clock: Great, just great. I’ve been outside for two minutes and I’m covered in POO..

Ocious P. Potter: Any last words?
Spud Spiller: Good Luck with the face, FATSO!

Good Burger

(1997)

Good Burger stars the same goofy and hilarious Kenan and Kel we all grew to love. We worshiped Nickelodeon. We probably watched almost every show on the channel at the time. All That, Kenan & Kel, Double Dare, Figure it Out, Legends of the Hidden Temple, Doug, Hey Arnold!, Rugrats, Clarissa Explains it All, Are you afraid of the dark?, The Amanda Show. What were your favorites? Kenan Thompson began acting on Saturday Night Live in 2003. Kel Mitchell currently stars on the Nickelodeon sitcom Game Shakers.

Favorite Movie Quotes:

ED: “I think of all kinds of stuff. Squirrels, cardboard boxes, things that are sticky”

ED: “I’m a dude, he’s a dude, she’s a dude, cause we’re all dudes. Hey!”

Kurt: I’m Kurt
Ed: I’m Ed
Kurt: I’m aware!
Ed: You said you were Kurt!

Dexter: I don’t even remember what my dad looks like.
Ed: I don’t remember what my dad looks like either, but at least I get to see him everyday.

Customer: I’ll see you in Hell!

ED: OK, See you there!

The Parent Trap

(1998)

The-Parent-Trap-1998

This movie is a remake of the original classic 1961 movie. This was the film debut for Lindsay Lohan. The soundtrack is one of my favorites from any movie. As kids, don’t we all secretly wish we could get our parents back together? Sometimes I want to fast forward, just to watch the end.

Favorite Movie Quotes:

Nick Parker: What’s going on?
Meredith Blake: Here’s what’s going on, buddy: the day we get married is the day I ship those brats off to Switzerland, get the picture? It’s me, or them. Take your pick.
Nick Parker: Them.
Meredith Blake: Excuse me?
Nick Parker: T-H-E-M, them. Get the picture?

Nick Parker: I made the mistake of not coming after you once, Lizzie. I’m not going to do that again no matter how brave you are.
Elizabeth James: And I suppose you just expect me to go weak at the knees, and fall into your arms, and cry hysterically. And say we’ll just figure this whole thing out. A bi-continental relationship with our daughters being raised here and there. And. And, you and I just picking up where we left off and growing old together. And… and… c’mon, Nick, what do you expect? To live happily ever after?
Nick Parker: Yes. To all of the above. Except you don’t have to cry hysterically.
Elizabeth James: [With tears in her eyes] Oh, yes I do.

Superstar

(1999)

220px-Superstarmovieposter.jpg

This movie might have been a little too mature, for me to watch at age nine, but I watched it anyway! It starred Molly Shannon’s catholic schoolgirl character, from Saturday Night Live.  The message of the movie is clear; don’t give up on your dreams, even the smallest ones. With dedication and hard work, you can shine, like a superstar!

Mary Katherine Gallagher: [to Evian] Well, you should be embarrassed because your parents named you after bottled water!

Mary Katherine Gallagher: Sometimes, when I get nervous, I stick my hands under my armpits and then I smell them like this.

Helen Lewengrub: You know what its time for? Supermodel documentary hour!

Mary Katherine Gallagher: I thought you said that mom and dad were savagely ripped apart and eaten by a school of hammerhead sharks.
Grandma Gallagher: I just told you that to make you feel better.

Now, we can pass on our love for the 90’s onto our children and hope they enjoy these movies, just as much as we did.

RIP Robin Williams and John Heard. You brought smiles to our faces and made our childhood memorable!
